What is 3D printing of orthopedic implants?

3D printing of an alveolar ridge defect filler is an innovative method for reconstructing jaw defects that involves creating a custom resorbable implant made of a biocompatible polymer–mineral composite (PLLA+HA) to replace lost bone tissue. The technology is based on precise digital modeling using the patient’s CT or MRI data, enabling highly accurate replication of the alveolar ridge anatomy. The implants stimulate osteogenesis, gradually bioresorb, and are fully replaced by the patient’s own bone, providing a stable foundation for subsequent dental implantation. This method eliminates the need for donor bone harvesting, reduces surgical time, minimizes trauma, and improves treatment predictability even in complex maxillofacial surgery cases.
